A new study in the New Zealand Journal of Medical Sciences found that the most common side effects of Viagra and similar drugs included a high incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) and decreased libido.
But the new research suggests that Viagra's effects may be limited because of a problem known as priapism.
Viagra is prescribed to men for erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, in men suffering from enlarged prostate. But because the drug has an active ingredient that causes unwanted side effects, the researchers looked at the drug's effect on male erectile function.

They found that men who took Viagra had a lower incidence of ED and decreased libido compared to those who did not.
The study found that the drug was associated with a lower incidence of priapism, but it was still associated with side effects.
Dr. Andrew Wills, a urology specialist at the University of Otago, said: "These findings suggest that this drug can be used in men with an erection that is not responsive to other treatments. This is a unique drug and should be used under medical supervision."
Viagra's side effects include headaches, facial flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion and indigestion-like symptoms.
"Men should talk to their doctor before taking any medicine, including Viagra, for ED, because it may be harmful," Dr Wills said.
The drug can affect the way nerves function, which can cause pain and stiffness in the muscles. But Viagra's side effects have also been reported.
